NEW: Baofeng DMR-82UV Tier 2 DMR Radio


According to Passion Radio it would appear that Baofeng are about to release a dual band Tier 2 DMR handheld radio.

Hot on the heels of the DM-5R (Tier 1, upgradeable to Tier 2) this radio is expected to be very popular with a price tag expected to be 'well below 100 Euros'.

Baofeng DM-5R Manual & Software

So it's just possible the the Baofeng DM-5R dual band DMR handheld is real as the operating manual & software have appeared online at QRZNOW.COM

I'm still not sure about this radio, the price just seems too low even for Baofeng. The cheapest SINGLE band DMR radio is around £99 at the moment and this DUAL band is expected to be around £53!!!!

Also why did they not take the chance and update the look of the radio? Keeping cost down I guess! 

Only time will tell.... In the meantime below is a link to the user manual....

Baofeng DM-5R - Dual Band DMR Handheld?????

Reported on QRZNOW.COM - But surely this cannot be real????

A dual band DMR handset from Baofeng with a price of only $69.99!!!!

Not only does the price seem extremely cheap but the images used are just images of the existing UV-5R range with the lettering changed at the bottom of the radio.

NEW: Baofeng UV-50X3 Tri-Band Radio

"The BTECH UV-50X3 is a tri-band radio with Full Duplex capabilities (which enables simultaneous TX/RX within VHF/1.25M/UHF) - as well as dual V/V and U/U receiver capabilities. The UV-50X3 operates on 136-174MHz, 222-225MHz, and 400-480MHz


The UV-50X3 is more than just a radio - it can also act as a full cross-band repeater! Allowing you to connect or extend the range of your repeaters, handhelds, and mobiles. The Cross Band repeater works in between VHF and UHF frequencies.

The UV-50X3 will transmit at 50 watts on both UHF and VHF; and it will transmit at 5 watts on 222-225MHz.



AIRBAND (AVIATION AM) AND WIDE RECEIVER RECEPTION

The UV-50X3 was includes a wide receiver that can receive beyond the transmitting frequencies on VHF/1.25M/UHF.

The UV-50X3 can also receive:

INDEPENTENT - VFO, AUDIO LEVELS, AND SQUELCH

The UV-50X3 includes separate volume adjustments for the independent VFOs. The UV-50X3 has dual speakers in the LCD panel - allowing stereo audio when one station is being received, but separate monaural speakers when both VFOs are active - which are controlled by the separate volume knobs. A third speaker is located on the radio body - which can be set as the only speaker, simultaneously be used with the panel speakers, or can be unused as well.

The UV-50X3 has both line-in and line-out jacks that allow you to output the radio audio to your own speaker system. The UV-50X3 allows you to listen to a line-in source while still monitoring your local nets.

The squelch is adjustable on each side of the display. Separate wide and narrow ceramic filters enable true narrow band operation.



1000 MEMORY CHANNELS

The UV-50X3 has 1000 memory channels and 2 separate memory banks (The Right VFO has 500 channels, the left VFO has 500 channels). You can program both active (TX/RX Channels) and passive (RX Only) channels into the same Memory bank.

SEPERATE, CUSTOMIZABLE FRONT LCD PANEL AND DTMF MICROPHONE

The UV-50X3 has a front panel that is separated from the main radio body. The panel is connected with standard Ethernet cable (15' included) allowing the radio body to be remotely (or trunk) mounted. The Front Panel includes several mounting accessories including a suction cup mount. You can set the LCD Panel to 8 different colors.

The Front Panel has a built-in microphone which allows you to either use either the included DTMF Microphone or Panel Microphone. The Separate DTMF microphone can also be plugged directly into the Main Radio Body.

PROGRAMMABLE AND CUSTOMIZABLE

The UV-50X3 can be completely programmed without a computer (including Channel Alpha-numeric names). 

The UV-50X3 is FULLY supported through the free CHIRP programming software (requires the PC05 Programming Cable). The UV-50X3 is the first radio to exclusively only use CHIRP software for programming. CHIRP is compatible on Windows, Linux and OSX (macOS).



GROUP TONES SUPPORTED

The UV-50X3 supports the most common Analog Tones. It supports CTCSS, DCS, and DTMF calling methods. Set-up your calling methods to call by group tones. Tone calling (private line) is required by most repeater applications and the UV-50X3 supports the latest standards.

The UV-50X3 can send DTMF tones. This allows for sending ANI (Caller ID) or remote commands that require DTMF tones.

THOROUGH QUALITY CONTROL

Each UV-50X3 is individually tested during extreme temperatures (-22 F) to ensure every radio can meet advertised performance requirements.

Baofeng Chargers - Fire Hazard?


A very interesting post on the Charlie Tango forum from Jamie (Cookster) who reports that he has had overheating issues with Baofeng chargers:

"Hello Guys,

I bring you greetings and some disturbing news....

I had a UV-5R charger almost catch fire a few weeks ago. It started to melt, the PCB was charred and split in two and the fumes that it gave off were nauseating.

Here is what happened next.......

I quickly complained to the Amazon seller. After a while they sent me another. This was identicle to the one which melted.

Today I decided to use it for the first time. ...

Guess what.... that same strong chemical fume cloud filled the room, the plastic dock started to melt again and the plug charger was red hot. I opened the bottom and once again found the board burned out. 

Now, my other Baofeng radio has a different plug and does not get hot or seem hell bent on setting fire to my carpet.

See photos ....... it's groundhog day all over again"

Jamie then posted a photo of the two chargers that he has:


"The charger on the LEFT is the dodgy type which gets hot and melts the docking station.

The charger on the right is more stable, nothing to worry about, no heat, no melting"


It would appear that different suppliers are sending out different chargers with the radios. I decided to take a look at which chargers were sent out with my Baofeng radios:

 
My Baofeng UV5R came with above charger which delivers 12v to the base. The base actually states that the input voltage should be 10v!!!! (This could certainly cause excess heat)




My Baofeng GT3 came with the charger shown above which delivers 10v to the base, the correct voltage!!!

I must point out that I have not had any issues with either of my chargers, but both of my chargers are different to those supplied to Jamie. There does not appear to be a 'standard' charger.

Of course this problem is not unique to Baofeng radios, many other radios and indeed completely different electronic devices such as mobile phones have seen reports of overheating chargers.

Personally I never charge anything unless I am able to keep an eye on the charging process. I certainly would not put one of these devices on charge then go out and leave it unsupervised.....

I must say that I own most of the radios on the chart and I find them all to be very capable radios. They are certainly amazing value for money!

Tim Peake Heard On Board The Space Station 19/02/2016





This time I used one of my Baofeng UV5R radios connected to a home made horizontal dipole antenna which was on a 3m pole in the back garden. The horizontal dipole does a much better job of receiving signals from space than my normal home base vertical. This is due to the fact that the vertical is 'end on' to the direction of the signal source where-as the horizontal dipole is 'side-on'.


UPDATE: Tim's next contact will take place on 26th February 2016 at 14:40 hours GMT with City of Norwich Schools.

The Big Net - 34 Years Of Legal CB Radio In The UK!


Just a heads up - It's almost that time of year again. On 2nd November 2015 legal UK CB will be 34 years old and stations up and down the country will take to the air during 'The Big Net'.

Previous years have seen many stations taking part and the event has encouraged people to get their old radios out of the cupboard and get back on the air so it's an ideal opportunity to make new friends and get people talking again.

New PMR446 Analogue And Digital Specifications!
CEPT ECC Decision (15)05 regarding 446 MHz PMR was approved on July 3rd 2015 repealing the earlier ERC/DEC/(98)25 and ECC/DEC/(05)12.
The changes which are expected to come into force next year will make changes to radios which operate in the band 446.000 - 446.200 using Analogue or Digital.
Analogue radios will have up to 16 channels with 12.5 KHz spacing.
Digital radios will have up to 32 channels with 6.5 KHz spacing.
It is also specifically mentioned that REPEATER use is not allowed! - This is a big change as internet linking/repeater use has been widespread on PMR446 and up to now has not been illegal.
d) that analogue and digital PMR 446 radio equipment is hand portable (no base station or repeater use) and uses integral antennas only in order to maximise sharing and minimise interference;

9. that all PMR 446 equipment is hand portable and shall use only integral antenna and an effective radiated power not exceeding 500 mW, while any base station, repeater or fixed infrastructure use is excluded;
MAIN POINTS:

1. that the purpose of this ECC Decision is to harmonise the usage conditions for analogue and digital PMR 446 radio equipment throughout Europe;


2. that CEPT administrations shall designate the band 446.0-446.2 MHz for the use of analogue PMR 446 with a channel plan based on 12.5 kHz spacing where the lowest carrier frequency is 446.00625 MHz;

3. that CEPT administrations shall designate the band 446.1-446.2 MHz for the use of digital PMR 446 with a channel plan based on 6.25 kHz and 12.5 kHz spacing where the lowest carrier frequencies are 446.103125 MHz and 446.10625 MHz respectively;
4. that CEPT administrations shall designate the band 446.0-446.2 MHz for the use of digital PMR 446 with a channel plan based on 6.25 kHz and 12.5 kHz spacing where the lowest carrier frequencies are 446.003125 MHz and 446.00625 MHz respectively as of 1 January 2018;
5. that analogue PMR446 equipment operating in the frequency range 446.1-446.2 MHz should use more robust receivers, as specified in ETSI TS 103 236 or equivalent technical specifications;
6. that analogue PMR446 equipment operating in the frequency range 446.0-446.1 MHz should use more robust receivers, as specified in ETSI TS 103 236 or equivalent technical specifications when placed on the market as of 1 January 2017;
7. that subject to decides 8, 9 and 10 below, CEPT administrations shall permit free carriage and use of all analogue and digital PMR 446 radio equipment;
8. that CEPT administrations shall exempt analogue and digital PMR 446 radio equipment covered by the present Decision from individual licensing;
9. that all PMR 446 equipment is hand portable and shall use only integral antenna and an effective radiated power not exceeding 500 mW, while any base station, repeater or fixed infrastructure use is excluded;
10. that the following technical characteristics shall be applied for PMR 446 applications in order to reduce the risk of harmful interference: a) all PMR 446 radio equipment shall have reception capability;
b) PMR 446 radio equipment having Push-To-Talk (PTT) functionality capable of being latched ‘on’ shall apply a 180 seconds maximum transmitter time-out;
c) PMR 446 radio equipment having no Push-To-Talk (PTT) functionality shall apply a 180 seconds maximum transmitter time-out and VOX (Voice activation exchange) control;
11. that compliance of PMR 446 radio equipment with all technical requirements shall be demonstrated with the applicable Harmonised European Standards ETSI EN 300 113-2, EN 301 166-2, or EN 300 296-2;
12. that the definitions in the Annex 1 apply for the purpose of this Decision;
13. that this Decision replaces ERC/DEC/(98)25 and ECC/DEC/(05)12 which are withdrawn;
14. that this Decision enters into force by 3 July 2015;
15. that the preferred date for implementation of this ECC Decision shall be 3 January 2016;
16. that CEPT administrations shall communicate the national measures implementing this Decision to the ECC Chairman and the ECO when the Decision is nationally implemented."
