Happy Anniversary UK CB Radio!

 

Today marks the 12th anniversary of the legalisation of AM and SSB here in the UK. We fought long and hard for this back in the day and for me 12 years has passed very quickly.

Whilst AM may not have taken off, in fact it is very rarely used, there is no doubt that SSB has been a great success. 

The weather is good here in the UK today and I have no doubt that there will be many stations on the air, out mobile and from the homebase.

Well worth watching this interesting video showing what to expect when you buy a CB radio handset these days. 

Of course CB handsets have a very limited range due to the tiny antennas and you really need to invest in a longer antenna or get yourself up to the top of hill to get the most out of it. Even then, making contacts on a CB handset can be very challenging as stations tend to be spread far and wide. It's not like the 'good old days' when there were a hundred operators in every square mile!

Personally I do like it, but I think that it will be a little bit fiddly to use with my big hands. I also think that this radio will probably be better leaving as a stock, legal set. I don't think that it will make a very good export radio. I guess that time will tell. Anyway, enjoy the video....
